Living With Parkinson’s Disease

Parkinson’s Disease is a progressive neurological condition. The most common symptoms are tremor, stiffness and slowness of movement. Tiredness or fatigue is also common. Whilst there is currently no cure for Parkinson’s disease, there are a number of treatment which can assist in controlling the symptoms. Everyone’s experience of living with Parkinson’s disease is different.
 

Our criteria for referral is:

• A confirmed diagnosis of idiopathic Parkinson’s / Parkinson’s plus condition

• GP practice is in Worcestershire

• Is under the care of a Consultant Physician or Neurologist

• Has been referred by their GP, Consultant, other health care professional or asked their GP to be referred and is over 18 years of age.

The role of the Clinical Nurse Specialist

Clinical Nurse Specialists can make a positive difference with their knowledge of symptom relief, assisting in making choices, identifying other supporting services and linking in with a Multi-Disciplinary Team. This can restore confidence and control back into the lives of patients and their families/carers.
 

What we offer

• A specialist service with people in the community setting, which strives to maximize functional independence by promoting self management, with the overall aim to enhance the individuals’ quality of life

• The service adopts a ‘person centred’ approach, co-ordinates care and works collaboratively with other agencies as required

• Advisory service to other clinicians.

Local support

There are a number of groups in the county, run by health professionals or volunteers, who provide therapy, advice and local support. These include:

  • Physiotherapy groups
  • Local advisor for Parkinsons UK
  • Local Support Groups
