Community Assessment Recovery Service

CARS replace the old Community Mental Health Teams (CMHTs). It provides help and support for those adults who need more care than is available from the Hub or Heathy Minds, but aren’t too poorly that they need the attention of the Home Treatment Team or a stay on one of the wards.

The ethos of our whole service is recovery, and supporting people to access the appropriate level of support. Traditionally we would see people in our CMHT teams for too long - in some cases many years - even if their condition had improved. We know that if someone is stuck in a service which isn’t adding much clinical benefit then their recovery is hindered, and it can add to the stigma around mental health.

The CARS team will visit someone who has a severe or enduring mental health illness at home or in a clinic and will provide care and treatment for as long as they need it, but when they’re deemed well enough, they will be discharged to alternative services. This might be Healthy Minds, or their GP for example.

We also have Peer Support Workers - who are people with a lived experience of mental health recovery - who can support someone to transition to more appropriate services.

If a service user is discharged to an alternative service and then relapse, they will be able to step back up into CARS quickly.

We are a service with a team of experienced and skilled mental health workers.
