A nursing associate is a new member of the nursing team in England. This role is designed to help bridge the gap between health and care assistants and registered nurses. Nursing associate is a stand-alone role that will also provide a progression route into graduate level nursing. They work with people of all ages and in a variety of settings in health and social care. The role will contribute to the core work of nursing, freeing up registered nurses to focus on more complex clinical care.

Student nursing associates can be from a range of local universities. Students are a mixture of apprentices – employed by the Trust, or direct entry – experiencing a practice learning placement in a range of clinical and healthcare settings across our organisation.

Student nursing associates are supported in practice by a practice assessor and practice supervisor. They also complete academic study at university and on completion of the two year programme will be awarded a foundation degree in science. There are a range of supportive roles that can be accessed if learners or assessors require any guidance.
