Have a look at our Pinterest Page and we have a board dedicated to Jokes for Kids. They are a great place to start introducing the idea of words having more than one meaning. Can they find the word that makes it funny?

Children with language difficulties often find it hard to 'get' jokes. Lots of jokes are based on a play on words. In order to understand these, children need to know about BOTH meanings of the word but children with language difficulties often only learn words in quite a narrow way and find it hard to think flexibly enough to know about all the meanings of a word and which one is right for the context. You can help by teaching them that some words have two meanings and showing them that they already know some of words like that! Then you can find some easy jokes and together work out why they are funny!
