About the service

We support the school so they can care for the whole needs of children and young people. We mostly support them by training and advising school staff. But children can also choose to speak directly with us for support or advice. This can be on their own or with a parent or carer. Each school has a named Special School Nurse. But the nurse is not always based at the school.

We look at the health care needs of your child when they start school. They will give training to school staff. This is so school staff can safely look after your child at school. This will support them to achieve their full potential in both education and wellbeing. The team also provides Health Education to promote healthy lifestyles.

All children should have access to the right services, at the right time. This is to make sure they can reach their full potential. We also work with other agencies. This is to make sure the right professionals are involved for you and your child.

Our team

The team lead for special school nursing manages our team. All nurses are registered professionals in either:

  • Registered learning disability
  • Registered  children’s nurse
  • Registered general nurse
All nurses have experience relevant to the needs of the children in their care. Health care assistants support the nurses. They also do administrative duties.

Our Special School Nurses all place children, young people and families first. We aim to deliver safe high quality services. We want to empower you and your family to achieve your full potential.

Our support and treatment

  • Clinical assessment and planning care of all New starters within school.
  • Training Education staff in clinical skills required to meet the child’s needs for example:
    • Giving prescribed medication
    • Management of Epilepsy. This includes emergency medication.
    • Enteral feeding tube feeding
    • Catheter care
  • Education Health and Care Planning (EHCP) and annual reviews. We give information to support health needs in school.
  • Looked After Child health assessment and annual reviews.
  • Promoting Continence through advice and product management.
  • Liaison and support for parents about their child’s Health and wellbeing
  • Support with transition to adult services.

We communicate with other professionals and services to make sure children receive the best possible care. This may include contact with a range of health and care professionals such as nurses, doctors, therapists, and specialist services. Please let us know if you do not want us to share information with other services.
