A Nursing Associate is a relatively new role within the nursing team in England, developed to help bridge the gap between healthcare assistants and registered nurses. It is a stand-alone position that also provides a progression pathway into graduate-level nursing.

Nursing Associates work with individuals of all ages across a wide range of health and social care settings. They contribute to the delivery of core nursing care, enabling registered nurses to focus on more complex clinical responsibilities.

Student Nursing Associates may be enrolled through various local universities. They typically enter the programme either as apprentices, employed by a Trust, or via direct entry routes, undertaking practice learning placements across diverse clinical and healthcare environments within the organisation.

In practice settings, Student Nursing Associates are supported by both a Practice Assessor and a Practice Supervisor. Alongside their clinical experience, they complete academic study at university. Upon successful completion of the two-year programme, they are awarded a Foundation Degree in Science.

A range of support systems is available to assist both learners and assessors throughout the programme, ensuring access to guidance whenever needed.
