Healthcare support worker development pathway

As a healthcare support worker in the trust, we can help you develop valuable skills such as taking vital signs, basic life support, infection prevention and control knowledge, and venepuncture.

The care certificate is a course which every non-registered healthare member of staff, such as healthcare support workers, must undertake once in post. During this course you will study 15 modules. The care certificate aims to equip health and social care support workers with the knowledge and skills needed to provide safe and compassionate care.

Healthcare support workers receieve support to develop their skills and knowledge through a Clinical Skills Tutor, as well as patoral support to help them build confidence and thrive here.

The Trust actively promotes learning and development opportunities within the organisation and apprenticeships form an important part of the development journey for both new employees and the existing workforce.

Level 2 and level 3 apprenticeships are available to progress in your career, for example you could take an 18 month level 3 apprenticeship to become a senior healthcare support worker. 

For staff in post, we now have 3 options available for staff to undertake Functional Skills English and Maths face to face or online, leading to a Level 2 qualification. This is the equivalent to an A-C GCSE.

Trainee nurse associate training is a two-year apprenticeship and on completion of the programme will be awarded a foundation degree in Science. Most of our applicants have previously worked as healthcare assistants for the trust and have progressed to becoming qualified nursing associates.

Completing the programme leads to a Band 4 nursing associate (NA) role, where you'll be working alongside our registered nurses to support and care patients.

It's a mixture of working and studying simultaneously, so you'll be able to to earn an income as well as study.

After a year on our preceptorship programme as a registered nursing associate, so you can gain skills and confidence in your role, a registered nursing degree apprenticeship is available. 

The registered nursing degree apprenticeship is a 48 month programme, where you will gain a bachelor of science degree, a level 5 apprenticeship qualification, and professional registration with the Nursing and Midwifery Council so you can practice as a registered nurse.

It's a mixture of working and studying simultaneously, so you'll be able to to earn an income as well as study.

There may be opportunities to take a fully-funded 4 year apprenticeship to become a registered occupational therapist, physiotherapist, or podiatrist.
