Chaperone advice for patients

You have the right to a chaperone

Your comfort, privacy and dignity matter to us

If you’re having an intimate examination, procedure or treatment, you can ask for a chaperone. A healthcare professional should explain the examination and the chaperone arrangement before the it starts.

What does a chaperone do?

  • Support you and help you feel safe and comfortable
  • Protect your privacy and dignity during the examination or procedure
  • Act as an impartial observer and be sensitive to your needs
  • Help you speak if you have any questions or concerns

Please remember:

  • You can ask for a chaperone at any time
  • You can ask questions before or during the examination
  • You can ask for the examination to pause or stop
