About the ward
The New Jenny Lind Ward was opened in late November 2022 following a complete rebuild to provide a bright clean and modern environment. It is purpose-built for people over 65 years of age who require an inpatient admission due to a diagnosis of a functional mental illness. At times it may be necessary to provide care and treatment for patients who have a dementia diagnosis or a cognitive impairment.
The ward is a mixed-sex ward, designed with open-plan communal areas, a main lounge, a female-only lounge, and bedrooms with ensuite bathroom facilities that maintain privacy and dignity. The ward has locally produced artwork on the ward, which reflects rural life in Hereford and the
surrounding areas. There is access to a central courtyard, a courtyard off the female lounge, and the main garden access is off the main lounge. There is a range of seating and raised planted areas to enhance the outside areas.
There is a range of interventions, assessments, and activities available on the ward; these are dependent on people’s individual needs. You may be formally supported by an occupational therapist, psychologist, or physiotherapist, or offered a falls assessment, gym inductions, ward-based activities individual or group and community-based activity.
What we do
Jenny Lind ward has a multidisciplinary (MDT) approach to care and treatment, the team consists of a designated ward consultant and ward doctors, nurses, occupational therapists, physiotherapists, and psychologists and works closely with adult social care. The MDT approach provides a robust holistic assessment of a patient’s psychological and physical health alongside their social care needs. It may identify appropriate treatments or therapy with the aim of supporting people to return to their optimum functioning back in the community.
The MDT work closely with the Older Adult Community Mental Health Team to continue to offer specialist support following discharge from hospital.
General information
Visiting
Family and carers are encouraged to visit their loved one on the ward but are required to book visits in advance to ensure that there is room availability to accommodate the visit. We will endeavour to be flexible depending on personal circumstances. Patients are generally encouraged to spend time off the ward with family and carers when they are well enough to do so.
How to access the service
The ward does not accept self-referrals. Referrals are made via mental health professionals.
Patients are admitted to the ward on a voluntary or informal basis, and some patients may be admitted under mental health legislation called the Mental Health Act. The ward is a safe environment where we can monitor who is coming onto the ward and who is leaving the ward at any given time. Entry and exit of the ward is by a locked door with a card access or through a visual and audio intercom system.
