Dementia Friendly Organisation
We aim to ensure people with dementia are understood, respected and supported across the organisation.
- We have been working to ensure all our estates are dementia friendly and appropriate for people with neurodiversity. We are part of PLACE based inpatient standards. This includes a group of clinicians and people living with dementia walking around our ward settings to assess how they meet dementia-friendly criteria. We have improved from being just around the national average to well above in comparison to other organisations. Things which have made a difference include dementia friendly clocks, using local art on walls for wayfinding/reminiscence, improving the furniture options available, and making toilet seats/rails in a single distinctive colour.
- We also aim to improve the skills and knowledge of our staff. We ensure all our staff have dementia awareness training when they join our organisation and are working to ensure all people who work regularly with those with dementia undertake more specialised training.
- We are also reviewing work around end of life and support for carers and linking closely with the Dementia Programme Board and the strategy for dementia across our Integrated Care Board (ICB).
- We have introduced yellow dementia friendly badges for staff. The colour
contrast of black and yellow is widely recognised as being highly readable for everyone, whilst also helping people living with dementia and visitors with visual impairments to easily identify staff names.
