Black Lives Matter – a message from Sarah Dugan, Chief Executive Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust

The death of George Floyd in America has captured the attention of people around the world, including here in the UK, and it is right that we all take time to think about the wider issues around racism and discrimination both from an individual and organisational perspective.

We aim to be a really open and inclusive Trust and work hard to maintain a working environment which is supportive of all regardless of background, race, sexuality or disability. But events over the last week should make all of us question and challenge our thinking to ensure any form of prejudice, discrimination and racism is stamped out in any form, wherever it exists.

It is really important that we have honest and open dialogue to help develop our collective understanding of what racism and discrimination means and how it manifests in daily life so we create longer-term, sustainable change across society, within organisations and in our personal interactions.

I want to make a firm commitment to all our BAME staff and patients that whilst we do not all understand how it feels, we do want to listen so we can take positive steps forward and I am encouraging everyone in the Trust to take the time to listen and understand better what needs to change.

Last year we launched our BAME staff network and we will be talking to members about how best to help develop our collective understanding and to think about what more we may need to do across the Trust.
