Learning Disability Nurse shortlisted for Rising Star Award

Amy Turton, Community Learning Disability Nurse, and Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner at Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust has been shortlisted for the Ann Shuttleworth ‘Rising Star’ category in this year’s Nursing Times Award.

The Ann Shuttleworth award recognises a nurse working in the NHS or independent sector who has been qualified for less than five years, who demonstrates exceptional qualities that embody the best of nursing and the leadership skills to inspire others to follow their example.

Amy who works in the North Worcestershire Community Learning Disabilities Team, has been described by colleagues as having unswerving dedication to her patients and team.

She provides specialist healthcare to adults with learning disabilities whose needs cannot be met by mainstream services alone, ensuring they receive the same care and treatment as others.

Amy said: “I very much hope to use this platform to inspire the next generation of nurses to choose Learning Disability Nursing as a rewarding career filled with endless opportunities!!”

Kathryn Hankins, Service Manager for Learning Disabilities said: “We are delighted to share the news that Amy has been shortlisted for the ‘’Ann Shuttleworth’s Rising Star” award and is a finalist in the Nursing Times Awards for 2022.

Amy qualified as a learning disability nurse in 2019 and since then has made constant efforts, going above and beyond, to showcase learning disability nursing as the exciting and rewarding career pathway that it is. She is passionate, energetic and displays unending commitment to being a fantastic ambassador for her profession; coupled with unswerving dedication to delivering care and treatment of the highest quality to some of the most vulnerable members of our community. She seeks constant ways to improve the quality of care and find creative solutions to challenges that work for service users and their carers.

Her colleagues and friends in the teams are immensely proud of Amy’s achievement. To get this far is a wonderful achievement that we know Amy credits to her team as much as herself.  We will be cheering her on when she attends the awards event in October, and we very much wish her the success she deserves”.

Each year the Nursing Times Awards brings together the nursing community to shine a light on the brightest talent in the profession and recognise those who are making nursing innovative, patient-focused, and inclusive.

Amy will be attending a 20-minute interview with the judging panel at the Nursing Times head office at Telephone House in London to discuss her work and achievements so far and explain three key reasons why she should win, highlighting what makes her stand out from the crowd.

The Nursing Times Awards will take place on Wednesday 26th October 2022 at the Grosvenor House Hotel on Park Lane in London where the winners will be announced.
