A new WhatsApp messaging service has launched in Worcestershire, improving access to sexual health care for young people.

SHOUTREACH, launched by the Worcestershire Integrated Sexual Health (WISH) Outreach Team provides young people aged 21 or under with an opportunity to discuss their sexual health concerns and access support via a Whatsapp messaging service.

It’s aimed at young people who may struggle to access sexual health appointments in traditional clinic settings, for reasons such as being at school during clinic opening times or not being able to arrange transport to attend a clinic.A young person sitting crossed legged with a smart phone in their hand on the screen is the Shoutreach text service information and contact number

After messaging SHOUTREACH, specialist Sexual health outreach staff will work with the young person to understand their needs and where required, arrange to meet at a time and location that works best for the young person.

The team provide a range of services, including contraception, emergency contraception, condoms, pregnancy testing, STI screening and treatment.

They work alongside other organisations that may be involved in the young person’s life, for example schools and colleges, children’s services, school health nurses, safeguarding teams, and the Get Safe Team.

Beth Gandy, WISH Outreach Nurse said, “SHOUTREACH was launched following the pandemic, where concerns grew around awareness and access to sexual health services among young people in the county.

“We found that many young people didn’t know our team offered sexual health services within their school or that they may not feel comfortable asking a professional to make a referral for them.

“We hope our new service makes it easier for young people in Worcestershire to access sexual health care and support when they need it”.

The service operates via WhatsApp, meaning young people only need an internet connection to contact the service and don’t have to rely on having credit on their phones.

After sending a WhatsApp message to 07925893838, they can expect a response within two working days (Monday – Friday), when a member of the team will arrange a telephone call with the patient to discuss the next steps.

If a young person gets in touch with a concern that could be better supported elsewhere, the Outreach Team will help them to access alternative services, for example the pregnancy advisory service, local pharmacy or a mainstream sexual health clinic.

Those over the age of 21 in need of sexual health advice, are encouraged to access the Worcestershire Integrated Sexual Health (WISH) website for information on local clinics.

Professionals working with young, or vulnerable people within the county should continue to refer using the traditional referral system as this provides invaluable information about the young person and ensures the team are aware of any existing safeguarding concerns.
