NHS Trust appoints Guardians to support transgender patients and staff

Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust announces latest inclusion initiative to support transgender patients and staff. This effort is aimed at promoting safety and respect, and addressing challenges faced in healthcare and in the workplace by transgender individuals.

The Trust is the main provider of Mental Health and Learning Disability services across the two counties, and delivers children’s and community services in Worcestershire. It also manages Worcestershire’s community hospitals and nursing and therapy services.

The initiative reflects the Trust’s commitment to creating an inclusive and supportive environment for everyone accessing and working within our healthcare services.

Transgender individuals often face unique challenges in healthcare settings, ranging from discrimination to inadequate understanding of their specific healthcare needs.

The appointment of dedicated Transgender Guardians aims to embrace diversity within healthcare settings and prevent gender or identity based discrimination. These guardians will handle a range of responsibilities and initiatives to protect and support transgender (or those who are transitioning) employees and service users:

  • Advocacy and Support: Providing guidance, support, and assistance to transgender staff and service users. Advocating for the transgender population and escalating issues as needed.
  • Education and Training: Educating staff members, including healthcare providers, about transgender healthcare needs and best practices. This includes fostering a better understanding of transgender identities and promoting inclusive care.
  • Policy and Practice Development: Working closely with the Trust’s leadership to review policies, guidelines, and acceptable practices to ensure they align with the best interests of transgender patients and staff.
  • Awareness and Outreach: Participating in raising awareness about transgender issues through community outreach initiatives, workshops, and events.

The Equality, Diversity, and Inclusion Lead for the Trust, Samantha Boatema-Cooke said, “We firmly believe that by establishing Transgender Guardians, we will make significant strides in eliminating barriers, reducing stigma, and improving healthcare experiences for transgender individuals within our Trust. Their expertise, empathy, and dedication will contribute to the overall enhancement of our services, thereby fostering a more inclusive and compassionate healthcare environment”.

“The appointment of Transgender Guardians is a significant milestone in our journey towards equitable healthcare. Together, let us continue to build a healthcare system that truly leaves no one behind.”

At Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust, we are committed to providing exceptional care that respects and embraces the diversity of all individuals.
