Perinatal Mental Health Team - Worcestershire

  • The Perinatal Mental Health Team supports women and birthing people who present with moderate-severe mental health difficulties during pregnancy or within one year of childbirth.

About the service

We are a multidisciplinary community team offering a service to women and birthing people who present with moderate-severe mental health difficulties during pregnancy or within one year of childbirth. 

Our team includes medics, psychologists, therapists, mental health nurses, occupational therapists (OT), nursery nurses, and peer support workers.

Who we support:

We support mums and birthing people: 

  • with a past history of severe mental illness (e.g. Bi-polar, psychosis).
  • with a past history of perinatal mental illness, who may be at risk of further perinatal mental illness.
  • with a family history in a first degree relative of bipolar affective disorder.
  • wish to receive preconception counselling.
  • require assessment and/or diagnosis of tokophobia.
  • have difficulties with bonding.

We also offer support to the wider family and have an established partner pathway.

Please note, we cannot support mothers’ who do not have care of their children or whom have adopted.

Treatment and support: 

We offer a range of support and interventions, including:

  • Psychology and CBT/EMDR therapy.
  • Compassion focused therapy (CFT).
  • Groups – CFT, baby massage, stay and play, yoga, walking groups, DBT skills, anxiety management, health promotion.
  • One to one mental health support with OT and/or mental health nurse/nursing associate.
  • One to one support around bonding and confidence building.
  • One to one peer support.

We work closely with other teams and organisations, including Herefordshire and Worcestershire Talking Therapies. This service offers fast-track support to parents experiencing low-level mental health concerns such as anxiety, low mood or worry.

How to access the service

Patients cannot refer themselves to our service. If you feel you need support from our team, please speak to a health or social care professional such as your GP, obstetrician, midwife, or health visitor, who can make a referral for you.
