Services A–Z

Podiatry

  • The Podiatry Service in Worcestershire provides triage, screening, assessment, diagnosis, treatment, and foot health education to patients with foot condition or a medical condition that affects the lower limb and foot. Having one of these conditions could result in a foot wound, ulcer, pain, infection, or amputation.

About the service

We are a service that supports patients and encourages self-care where possible. Patients, carers, and family members where indicated are actively encouraged and become involved in the development and delivery of treatment plans where appropriate.

New Referral Criteria Matrix and Referral Forms

After engaging with our key stakeholders we are pleased to announce our new referral matrix criteria and referral forms, we hope this will provide much needed  clarity on the patients that need to be referred to the podiatry service.

Our focus in Podiatry is

  • Protecting Limbs
  • Preserving Mobility
  • Promoting Self-Management and Independence

by promoting these key priorities we strive to maintain healthy feet, managing  pain and assisting  in the  prevention of wounds and infection for a healthy lifestyle.

We are a service that supports patients and encourages self-care where possible. Patients, carers, and family members where indicated are actively encouraged and become involved in the development and delivery of treatment plans where appropriate.

The Podiatry Service is unable to accept referrals for:

  • Toenail cutting
  • Verrucae
  • Fungal nail infections, fungal skin infections and other dermatological skin conditions
  • Corns/callus in individuals who have no medical risk of foot ulceration
  • Foot deformities with no pain and/or minimal risk of wounds or infection

Patients requiring general routine Podiatry care who do not meet the criteria for treatment will be signposted to non-NHS Podiatry Services, i.e. HCPC registered Podiatrists.

These can be found on the following websites:

What to Expect

When you are referred to one of our Podiatry services, your referral and notes will be reviewed by a Podiatrist to make sure we prioritise your care appropriately and that your condition fits our services criteria.  Following this we may contact you by telephone or letter to offer you some advice about self-management of your condition or to signpost you to a more appropriate service to support you.

We may offer you an appointment to attend one of our clinics for an assessment with a Podiatrist.  During this appointment we will work with you to establish priorities for your care and if appropriate create a care plan that helps support you with your foot health. You may wish to bring along a friend, family member, carer to your appointment.

If you need an interpreter, please let the team know so that this can also be arranged for you in advance of the appointment.

  • You will be asked to bring a list of medication and provide a brief medical history and information on your condition. Medical History Leafet
  • We recommend that you wear loose fitting clothing especially for Musculoskeletal appointments.
  • Shoes and hosiery which can be easily removed.
  • We will work together to create a plan that helps you manage your Podiatry care.
  • A care plan will be discussed with you focusing on areas of greatest need. The agreed treatment plan may include
  1. Short-term one-off treatment.
  2. Ongoing treatment
  3. Referral to another service
  4. Foot care and footwear advice
  5. Discharge
  •  Your care plan will be reviewed regularly, and you will be involved in making any changes to the agreed care plan, which may involve discharge from the service.

You will not routinely be seen by the same podiatrist.
