Celebrate Learning Disability Week in Herefordshire and Worcestershire

Celebrations are currently taking place across Herefordshire and Worcestershire to mark Learning Disability Week 2023.

Led by Herefordshire and Worcestershire Health and Care NHS Trust, the main providers of mental health and learning disability services in the county, the week will be marked with a series of events across the two counties supporting people with a learning disability.

Created by the charity Mencap, the theme of this years’ Learning Disability Week is all about busting myths about living life with a learning disability, showing the world the incredible things that people with a learning disability achieve.

Locally, our Worcestershire Community Learning Disability Team are hosting open days in conjunction with Replacement Care and Children’s Short Breaks at Osborne Court, Malvern and Churchview, Princess of Wales Community Hospitals.

Melanie Jones, Interim Worcestershire Community Learning Disabilities Team Manager said: “Learning Disability Week is a celebration aiming to improve the quality of life for individuals with learning disabilities by raising awareness about important issues, fighting stigma and discrimination. We have done this in a number of ways, including hosting events for breast care, occupational therapy and menopause awareness sessions as well as work in dementia pathway, blood taking and dental desensitisation and campaigns for Meal Time matters and Something to Say.”

Our Herefordshire Community Learning Disability Team are hosting a free Meet the Team event at the Aspire Hub, Hereford where people will be able to join in on a variety of activities including salsa, mindfulness, arts and craft, and food and drink.

Colleen Brady, Community Learning Disability Nurse and Trainee Advanced Clinical Practitioner said: “The Herefordshire Adult Community Learning Disability Team are proud to be working in partnership with local providers to bring together a series of events to celebrate living life well with a Learning Disability. This year’s theme is “myth busting” and these events will showcase the incredible talents of the people we are privileged to work with.”
